Dukesbox Presents: Tower Defense! (In Beta)

Tower Defense

Dukesbox is the newest skill gaming site to hit the block, and has been working on the title that’s going to send a ripple effect to every existing gaming site out there. In Tower Defense, your objective is to build weapon towers to stop “creeps” from escaping to the other ends of the stage. You’re given an array of towers to use — each with their own different specs and special properties. There are over 35 different types of creeps lurking around, and it’s your job to dispose of them!

Note that at this time, the game is still in public beta testing. Numerous tweaks and balances will be made in the very near future to ensure a fair and enjoyable skillgame for everyone to play. Check it out, and let us know what you think of Tower Defense in the forums!

I believe the idea behind tower defense games comes from Warcraft 3. Basically you need to build different type of towers in order to destroy the “creeps”. Usually the towers have different properties and upgrade opportunities. What’s the difference of this “Dukesbox Presents: Tower Defense! (In Beta)” from that. Anyhow, this sounds interesting to me, I’ll check it out.

I like the game, but after about the halfway point it gets too easy. My final round score was 3746. To balance it better I would add about 20% more enemies from level 25 on, and increase the speed a bit, and on the final round add 100% more enemies. Well, maybe 200%, it was way too easy.

Also, it would be nice if I could see the hit points of the enemy. And if I could read something that explained all the nuances on bonus points, I know I got bonus points somewhere for something.

Ok, I played again and got 3820. Here are some things that would make the game nicer:

    1) make the last few rounds a lot harder, especially the final round, I would significantly increase enemy hit points and number of enemies — right now the last round is much easier than the ones before it
    2) at the end of a game, add the player’s cash to his/her score, making cash conservation an objective
    3) show more info on the screen, such as level#, enemy info for this round, cost for currently selected tower or upgrade (right now it shows it then it goes away)
    4) cap off the tower upgrades at purple, and put some unique setting on the final upgrade for each tower (however, they are a bit too powerful now, so scale them back a bit first), for example, tower1 could have double range on purple, tower2 could have double fire rate on purple, etc.
    5) display an additional stat for each tower: area of effect (or “splash” or whatever you want to call it), to account for the size of the area damaged by each shot
    6) I think there’s a fairness issue whenever the incoming paths are too far apart, these games are much harder to win
    7) building on the cash conservation objective you could also include an interest rate, computed at the end of each round, this way the more cash a player saves early on, the more he gets for free later

Nice score, Tony. You should really try making a cash deposit on Dukesbox and participate in the current tournament set up for Tower Defense. With your scores, you’d be sure to make an easy profit (though you’d have to top my score of 5,557 to take 1st place).

I’ve posted your comments and suggestions on the forum, as it’ll get more views from our players and the development team. You can find the link at:

Also, I’ll be making my comments on the thread there.

Well, score-wise I’m at a disadvantage due to not having any information on how to score. Is there a reference that explains scoring (beyond the obvious enemy kills and losses)?

Also, I put some more thought into my suggestions, could you replace my previous suggestions with these? Also, a short bug list at the end.

    suggestions:

    1) It needs to display more information, such as level#, current enemy info (hit points, speed, type), etc.

    2) I think adding cash to score would produce a much larger range of final scores, and I think a player with more cash at the end should win because he/she is obviously more skilled to get that far with less cash.

    3) And, if you add cash to score, then interest would add a new dynamic to the game: conserving cash to make more interest, to pay for better towers for the final level.

    4) The Euro-fighter level is just right. However, all the rounds after this are way too easy. I would increase hit points by about 50%.

    5) The final level should be much harder, I suggest doubling the hit points and increasing the number of enemies by about 20%. However, I did see that I could launch the last two levels simultaneously. If there was an advantage to doing this (score bonus or something), then maybe increase the figures a bit less so that its still possible.

    bugs:

    1) sometimes when I attempt to select a placed tower (to upgrade it or to check its stats), it instead stacks a new tower ontop of the old one

    2) sometimes when I sell a tower it makes another tower disappear (both the selected one disappears and some other one on the board disappears), and the other spot becomes unbuildable and untravelable, and it no longer functions as a tower

    3) when starting a game, and I click any tower other than tower 1, it will place tower 1 instead, unless I click my selection twice

    another bug…

sometimes the SAM tower will shoot from the top left corner of the screen, instead of from the tower, and these shots never hit the target

  16. Tony 8 June 2008 at 11:43 pm Permalink

    A couple more bugs:

    1) the shock tower sometimes shoots from the top left corner of the screen, just like the sam

    2) not all tower configurations change colors when they are upgraded

Well, my best so far is 4693, however, I’m still really confused about the scoring, that game wasn’t much different from one 1000 points less. I hope scoring is explained better in the final rules setup.

Also, I’ve discovered a number of nuances to the game that I really like, and think that all it really needs is to have the bugs fixed and the scoring explained and it would be a great game without any of the other suggestions I made.

Regarding the bugs, I noticed a pattern. The bugs are occurring less and less now. I don’t know if you guys are fixing them, or if the changes to my strategy is making them occur less often. If its the latter, then I’d say that you might have to play with your strategies a bit to get some of them to happen. A few days ago I wouldn’t have more than one game out of 10 that was bug free, now most of them are bug free.
